Observance of MAY DAY is an important function of the West Bengal Labour Welfare Board. Every year on 1st May this historical day is observed centrally through a function organized in the “Rabindra Sadan” auditorium in Kolkata. However, this year, at the instance of the Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Labour Department, Government of West Bengal & Chairman of this Board, the venue has been shifted to “SARAT SADAN” at Howrah with a view to decentralizing the programme and reaching out to more and more workers.

Besides, the Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Labour Department, Government of West Bengal & Chairman of this Board, the occasion was also graced with the presence of Shri Arup Roy, Hon’ble Minister, Agricultural Marketing. In his valuable lecture, the Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Labour Department, Government of West Bengal & Chairman of this Board pointed out to the need for doing some real good to the workers. The Board, he said, would turn around shaking off the long neglect and indifference.

The Hon'ble Minister-in-Charge, Labour Department, Government of West Bengal and other dignitaries present on the occasion handed over cheque of Scholarships/Stipends to many eligible candidates. A number of teams coming through different Labour Welfare Centres presented recreational performance.

May Day was also celebrated for the North Bengal Region on 30th May, 2013 at Kiran Chandra Tea Estate Labour Welfare Centre, Bagdogra. Cultural performances were presented by different teams comprising workers and their wards coming from various parts of Terrai, Dooars and Hills area. The function was presided over by Welfare Commissioner. Many other distinguished persons were present in the programme including the manager of Kiran Chandra Tea Estate.
